What's Happening in the High Desert This October
October is the desert's best month, and this year it's packed. The Gem and Mineral Show, the Orchid Festival, three weekends of HWY 62 Open Studio Art Tours, the Joshua Tree Music Festival, the Night Sky Festival, Halloween events and our weekend markets: here's everything worth circling on your calendar.

October is the month the desert has been waiting for all year. The heat finally loosens its grip, the nights get cool enough to need a jacket, the boulders catch the light differently, and the whole place seems to exhale. It's the best month to be out here — and this October, there is no shortage of things to do.
Here's everything happening in and around the high desert this month.
The Joshua Tree Gem and Mineral Show — October 1–4
Kick off the month at the Joshua Tree Gem and Mineral Show at Joshua Tree Lake — crystals, minerals, fossils, and vendors from across the region. Free and open to the public, it's one of the most unique and accessible events of the season. A perfect stop before the rest of October kicks into gear.
31st Annual Morongo Basin Orchid Festival — October 3–4
Out in Landers at Gubler Orchids, 2200 Belfield Blvd, one of the most unique community events of the fall season returns for its 31st year — this time also celebrating 51 years of Gubler Orchids in the desert. Free to attend and genuinely worth the drive.
Wander through lush, orchid-filled greenhouses with hundreds of blooms on full display. The American Orchid Society Judged Orchid Show lets you see award-worthy specimens up close. Orchid classes from the Riverside/San Bernardino Orchid Society run all weekend — sign up in advance and take home your own orchid or arrangement. The second annual orchid art show is new this year and worth checking out.
The exclusive Shari Baby Orchid Beer from JT Brewery is back by popular demand — only available during festival weekend. Food vendors and live entertainment run both days. Every $10 spent on orchids and beer earns you Rotary Bucks to vote for your favorite local nonprofit. Your dollars directly support organizations across the Morongo Basin. Big crowds, big hearts, and a lot of beautiful flowers. More at gublers.com.
HWY 62 Open Studio Art Tours — October 3–4, 10–11, and 17–18
Now in its 25th year, the HWY 62 Open Studio Art Tours is the largest open studio art event in Southern California and one of the most beloved October traditions in the high desert. More than 200 artists open their studios from 10am to 5pm across three weekends — painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, fiber art, assemblage, and more, spread across Joshua Tree, Yucca Valley, Twentynine Palms, Pioneertown, Landers, Wonder Valley, Flamingo Heights, and Morongo Valley.
It's free, self-guided, and genuinely one of the best ways to experience the creative community of the high desert. Download the app or pick up a printed catalog and map to plot your route. You could spend all three weekends out here and still not see everything.
The Joshua Tree Music Festival — October 8–11
The 21st Annual Fall Joshua Tree Music Festival returns to Joshua Tree Lake Campground for four nights and three days of live music, movement, mindfulness, and desert magic. Three stages running from 10am to 2am create a continuous sonic journey each day — the lineup blends world music, Americana, electronic, folk, and genres that don't have names yet, curated to build and flow as the day progresses.
Beyond the music there are 100+ play shops, yoga, Kidsville for the younger crowd, a Healing Oasis with massage, and art installations scattered across the grounds. Camping is included with the ticket. The festival has grown organically through friends bringing friends for 23 years and 44 festivals — a super-juicy-sized, family-friendly gathering that feels real, welcoming, and alive. Tickets at joshuatreemusicfestival.com.
The Night Sky Festival — October 9–10
The 11th Annual Night Sky Festival runs October 9–10 at Sky's The Limit Observatory & Nature Center, 9697 Utah Trail in Twentynine Palms — right outside the north entrance to Joshua Tree National Park. Presented by the Joshua Tree National Park Association and Sky's The Limit, this two-day family-friendly event features constellation tours, telescope clinics, hands-on science activities, inspiring lectures from NASA scientists, a family Space Camp, and a glow-themed kickoff event Friday night.
Saturday's schedule includes a Community Mural Tiles activity during Space Camp in the morning, astronomy lectures at Patriotic Hall from 1–4:30pm, a Star Party Happy Hour at 29 Palms Beer Company from 4–6pm, and a Night Star Party at the observatory from 7–11pm. Festival proceeds benefit Sky's The Limit and the JTNPA's DiscoverJTREE youth education program. Tickets required — reserve at skysthelimit29.org.
Live Music at Pappy & Harriet's — All Month Long
Pappy & Harriet's in Pioneertown has one of the strongest October calendars in years. The roadhouse is about 15 minutes from Joshua Tree and has been hosting live music in the desert since the 1980s. This month runs nearly every night across rock, country, folk, electronic, and everything in between.
The full October calendar is packed — check pappyandharriets.com for the complete lineup, ticket prices, and door times.
Halloween in the High Desert
The desert does Halloween well. The landscape is already strange and beautiful and a little otherworldly this time of year — long shadows, dark skies, coyotes in the distance. You don't need much decoration out here. The place provides.
For families, the Twentynine Palms Halloween Bash on Thursday, October 30th from 6–8pm at Freedom Plaza is the community event of the season — free, all ages, with Trunk or Treat, games, prizes, music, and activities. Costumes encouraged for kids and adults. The Joshua Tree Sportsman's Club Trunk or Treat runs Halloween night, October 31st, from 5:30–7:30pm at 6225 Sunburst in Joshua Tree — a beloved local tradition with decorated vehicles, candy, and a photo booth.
For adults, the Pappy's Halloween weekend shows are the move. And if you want something quieter, a night hike to Skull Rock on Halloween is exactly as atmospheric as it sounds. Bring a headlamp, wear layers, and let the desert be the haunted house.
The Weekly Markets — Every Saturday and Sunday
The JT Trading Post outdoor market runs every Saturday and Sunday starting at 9am — local makers, handmade goods, desert energy, and 47+ vendors who show up every weekend. The Joshua Tree Certified Farmers Market runs alongside it on Saturday mornings from 8am to 1pm. Come early, stay for both.
Before You Head Out
Stop into JT Trading Post before any of these. Open seven days a week — weekdays noon to 5, weekends 9 to 5. Pick up a layer for the cool October nights, a hat for the festival grounds, a vintage piece for a Halloween costume that doesn't look like it came out of a box, or something from a local maker worth carrying home.
October in the desert is something. Get out in it.
