A Cooler Morning Above Joshua Tree: Pipes Canyon and Pioneertown
Hot week in Joshua Tree? Hike Pipes Canyon at free Pioneertown Mountains Preserve at sunrise, then lunch on Mane Street. Trails, hours, drive, forecast.
On this page
The easiest way to beat this week's heat without leaving the Morongo Basin is to go up, not out: drive about 12 miles from Joshua Tree to Pioneertown, hike Pipes Canyon at the Wildlands Conservancy's free Pioneertown Mountains Preserve right after sunrise, then wander Mane Street and catch an early lunch at Pappy & Harriet's when the kitchen opens at 11 AM. The preserve trailhead sits at 4,465 feet, and the National Weather Service has it running about 10 degrees cooler than the Joshua Tree area all week.
Why Pioneertown and Pipes Canyon this week?
Early October is still acting like summer down on Highway 62. This morning's National Weather Service forecast for Joshua Tree calls for highs near 96°F today, 97°F Thursday, and 95°F Friday, with no heat alerts posted.
Up in Pipes Canyon, the forecast for the preserve is a different story:
- Wednesday: sunny, high near 86°F, north wind 5–10 mph
- Thursday: sunny, high near 87°F, east wind around 10 mph, gusts to 20 mph
- Friday: sunny, high near 85°F, gusts to 25 mph
- Saturday: mostly sunny, high near 79°F
- Sunday: high near 71°F, with a chance of rain showers after 11 AM
- Monday: high near 62°F, slight chance of showers
That's the real fall turn arriving, and Pioneertown is close enough that you can fit the whole outing into a morning. Joshua Tree itself drops to a forecast high near 79°F by Sunday, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms.
How far is Pioneertown from Joshua Tree, and how long does the drive take?
From our shop on 29 Palms Highway in Joshua Tree, it's about 12 miles to Pioneertown: west on Highway 62 to Yucca Valley, then north up Pioneertown Road. Plan on roughly 25 minutes. From Pioneertown, the preserve's trailhead at 51010 Pipes Canyon Road is about 4 more miles, or around 10 minutes. (Those are routing estimates, not official figures, so give yourself a little cushion.)
This morning, Caltrans reported no traffic restrictions on SR 62, and San Bernardino County Public Works' road-closure map showed no closures on Pioneertown Road or Pipes Canyon Road.
One heads-up for later in the day: Pappy & Harriet's own visitor info describes Pioneertown Road after dark as "pitch black, steep, and windy." If you stay for dinner or a show, pick a designated driver or book a ride ahead, because ride-share pickups out there are hit or miss.
Which trail should you hike at Pioneertown Mountains Preserve?
The preserve covers 25,500 acres, from 7,800-foot piney ridges down into the Pioneertown Valley, and Pipes Canyon carries a year-round stream. The lightning-caused fire in 2006 burned about 70,000 acres and killed most of the preserve's Joshua trees, pinyons, and junipers. Two decades later, the canyon is still regrowing, and the bare slopes put the volcanic rock and geology front and center.
Trail distances from the preserve's current trail map:
- Visitor Center to Olson Ruins (Pipes Canyon): 3.3 miles out and back, moderate. This is the one for a hot-week morning.
- Chaparrosa Spring Loop: 3.8 miles, moderate
- Chaparrosa Peak Trail: 6.0 miles out and back, difficult, topping out at 5,541 feet
- Indian Loop Trail: 6.5 miles, moderate to difficult (newly reopened)
- Sawtooth Loop Trail: 8.0 miles, difficult (reopened)
Pipes Canyon starts from the Visitor Center trailhead. The Sawtooth and Chaparrosa trails use the newer Sawtooth Mountains Trailhead off Kees Road (4,242 feet). The preserve asks hikers not to park at the old Chaparrosa Wash access. Instead, continue about a mile past the wash and look for the Sawtooth Mountains Trailhead sign on the left. There are no restrooms at the Sawtooth Trailhead.
What should you know before you go?
- Hours: sunrise to sunset, seven days a week. Sunrise is 6:45 AM today and sunset is 6:22 PM, per the U.S. Naval Observatory. By Sunday those times shift to 6:48 AM and 6:17 PM.
- Cost: free. The Wildlands Conservancy charges no admission at any of its preserves.
- Dogs: allowed on leash.
- Not allowed: fire of any kind, hunting or shooting, alcohol or smoking, collecting, drones, and off-highway vehicles.
- Wildlife: the preserve lists mountain lions, black bears, and rattlesnakes as safety notes. Watch where you put your hands and feet, especially on warm mornings.
- Weather swing: if Sunday's showers or thunderstorms build, stay out of canyon bottoms and washes.
- Water: bring more than you think. Even at 86°F, a canyon with little shade dries you out fast.
What is there to do in Pioneertown after the hike?
Pioneertown was founded in 1946 by a group of Hollywood investors, including Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Russell Hayden, and the Sons of the Pioneers (the town is named for them). They built it as a working Old West movie set, and more than 50 films and TV shows were shot there in the 1940s and '50s, according to Pappy & Harriet's history page. One of those sets, a cantina, became Pappy & Harriet's Pioneertown Palace in 1982.
After the hike, walk Mane Street while it's still morning-quiet and browse the small shops. Then get on the list at Pappy's. Per its info page:
- Hours: open 7 days a week, 11 AM–11 PM, last dinner seating 9:30 PM
- Seating: no reservations for parties of 8 or fewer (first-come waitlist at the host stand), and no take-out
- Tickets: dining and shows are separate, so you don't need a show ticket to eat
- Parking: no parking on Pioneertown Road; follow the on-property signs
Aside, if you'd rather turn the day into a night: Pappy's live music calendar lists Damien Jurado with St. Yuma on Thursday, Oct. 8 (doors 8 PM, show 9 PM, all ages, $30–$35) and Shovels & Rope on Sunday, Oct. 18 (doors 8 PM, show 9 PM, all ages, $36–$41). More dates are on our Around Town calendar.
