Meet the Makers: Desert Pantry & Provisions

Some souvenirs sit on a shelf. Others get used up — a spice you reach for every night, a coffee that starts your morning, an olive oil you save for the good meals, a marshmallow you fight your kids for at the campfire. This round of Meet the Makers is about the second kind: the local food, drink, and kitchen goods that turn a trip to Joshua Tree into something that shows up in your kitchen for months after.

Here's who's behind the pantry shelf at JT Trading Post.

Desert Dust

Desert Dust is our house spice blend, and it comes straight from the founder's kitchen. Built on dates as its base — dehydrated, ground, and worked into something earthy and hard to place — it's formulated with real ingredients only. If it's not real, it's not in the bottle.

Put it on eggs, roasted vegetables, grilled meat, whatever's on the counter. It's the kind of thing you bring home meaning to try once and end up sprinkling on everything. Not a novelty — a real gift that tells a story about this place every time you use it.

JT Olive Oil

Some things really are made here, from the ground up. JT Olive Oil is a limited-edition extra virgin olive oil pressed from Joshua Tree groves — fresh-harvested, locally grown, and locally processed, with each bottling capped at a small, numbered run.

It's the kind of bottle you save for the good meal, not the everyday one — the sort of gift that tells someone exactly where you were and what the desert can grow when you look past the sand.

Wonder Lake Coffee

Wonder Lake Coffee is a small-batch roaster started in Joshua Tree in 2021, built around sourcing from sustainable small farms. It's coffee made for desert mornings — the kind you brew before the heat sets in, cup in hand, watching the light change over the rocks.

Simple, well-sourced, no gimmicks — just a genuinely good local roast worth bringing home a bag of.

Mojave Mallows

Mojave Mallows started with two former Girl Scouts and a campfire habit they never grew out of. Born right here in Joshua Tree, their organic marshmallows are made with dates and agave instead of the usual stuff — naturally soft, a little caramel-colored, and genuinely different from anything you grew up roasting.

Sustainably packaged and made for the outdoors, they turn a campfire night into something worth doing right — and they travel a lot better than you'd expect for a marshmallow.

Why It Matters

Food and drink are some of the most personal souvenirs there are — you don't just look at them, you take them into your body, share them at your table, hand them to someone you love. These four makers turned the high desert into something you can taste: spice from the founder's own kitchen, oil pressed from local groves, coffee roasted for desert mornings, marshmallows built for a campfire night.

Supporting them means supporting the people making the desert edible, one small batch at a time.
